Computer Resource Lab

An LEQSF grant for $61,768 funded our exceptional Computer Resource Lab which houses eight Gateway 2000 multimedia computers, two printers, and a second mobile computer station. In addition it funded computer stations for the freshman labs (eight Macs and LabWorks units for data acquisition), and a mobile computer station with a multimedia PowerMac, a Flexcam, and a projection system. Grant authors were: Dr. Jerry Suits, Ms. Joan Valleé, and Dr. Robert Rettke.

Varian Carr 50 UV/VIS

A picture of the UV/VIS spectrophotometer.

The Department of Chemistry has recently purchased a Varian Carr 50 ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometer. This instrument is capable of spectrophotometric analyses from 190 - 1100 nm. The Carr 50 Spectrophotometer incorporates a Xenon flash tube with a maximum scan rate of 24000 nm per minute. Photosensitive samples are not exposed to continuous light as the Xenon lamp flashes only when acquiring a data point. The instrument features a sliding cover that is extremely easy to access for normal use and compatible with a wide range of accessories. A fiber optic microprobe accessory (3mm in width) is used to measure the optical densities of samples of small volume and is ideal for biological samples. The software package allows intuitive data collection for single sample reads or programmable wavelength scans. In addition, the software allows for automated standard curve generation and regression analysis as well as the collection and analysis of enzyme kinetics data.
